I'm going to be a few hundred EQMs short of MVPG again this year, and wondering if I can just book a cheap short haul flight somewhere to pick up the slack. As much as I'd prefer to book main cabin or whatever they call it, I'd rather save the money.

Yes, the 500 mile minimum applies to American Airlines marketed and operated flights. There is no carve out for BE fares.

To ensure flight credit for travel on American Airlines, the two-letter airline code (AA) must precede the flight number (for example, AA XXXX) on your ticket receipt or boarding pass.
Mileage earned is based on a percentage of actual flight miles flown and earn 500 minimum miles on flights shorter than 500 miles. No miles will be earned for classes of service not listed above.
