In terms of what you are raising, you CANNOT ask the hotel in advance for a confirmed upgrade: as specified in §20, "all guaranteed upgrades shall be confirmed at the time of arrival at the hotel"
Furthermore, in case the hotel finds itself in the position to not be able to fulfil the guaranteed benefit of room upgrade, in line with §10 you will be compensated with either $50 or 10,000 points (more or less same value) - ONLY ONCE per stay!
Well maybe not..but in case I did and they immediately answer with an confirmed upgrade... so you never loose anything to contact...
