As for cash upgrades, you can look at your itinerary in the AA app where AA sometimes offers upgrades in advance of flight. At JFK you might be able to pay cash to AA to upgrade J to F by asking at the lounge. Neither of these methods should earn you extra tier points or avios unless a mistake is made. At JFK you could try to do a fare difference upgrade (pay the difference in the fares between your business class fare and the regular cost of the first class fare) but I seriously doubt that AA will do this as you are on a BA ticket with additional BA segments still to fly.

Thanks very much for all your help jerry a. laska. As I booked with BA holidays, I am assuming that it is on a 125 ticket. I am surprised that an AA cash upgrade would not get me the extra tier points though as I have upgraded directly with AA before (on an AA booking) and got the extra tier points. My only concern about upgrading at JFK or via American directly is that they may change the flight number from the current BAXXX to AAXXX which would affect my double-tier points.
While I am here, does anyone know about these SWU's? (System Wide Upgrades) I am BAEC Gold but my status runs out on 30 Sept. Will I have any on my account and if so can I use them to upgrade LHR-JFK and JFK-LAX from Club to First or do I need to wait until I re-qualify for Gold before they will show up?
