Given that Amex charges a fee (probably ~ $20 in your case) for converting MR points to Delta Sky Miles, I would consider purchasing a cash roundtrip on AA via Amex Travel, and redeeming your MR points for a penny apiece,
if Amex Travel is offering the same $399 roundtrip fare that AA is. Or buy a cash ticket directly from AA, and save your MR points until you can find a more valuable use for them.
