I never looked at it this way, but it makes sense that that's what they're doing. Here's what I have at the moment (amounts rounded for simplicity):
- Current ticket - 15Sep-30Sep CHF 6,000
- Change to 15Sep-29Sep - CHF 7,600 (ie 1,600 more than what is already paid)
- New ticket 15Sep-29Sep - 4,900 CHF (ie 1,100 less than what is already paid - 2,700 less than changing the existing booking)
Makes no sense on the face of it. I almost never end up changing flight dates once booked, but on the few occasions I have, if the fare is lower it's been refunded to me (with AC, AI and CX).
First time needing to do this with LHG - and it looks like I'm better off just making a fresh booking and cancelling the existing one. Strange logic they have.
Given that, no brainer, buy the new cheaper ticket & then immediately cancel the old one
