There are no US regulations with regards to mandatory compensation for denied boardings due to airline mistakes or misunderstandings. An airline can check if there was an oversale situation on your flight if you file for DOT IDB compensation, and will likely reject such claims if they see there were no denied boardings on flight due to oversales.
Thanks. So, from what I have read so far, in the end, It may well be the case that AA have no obligation to give us any compensation for a 24hr delay and downgrade due to their mistake. My wife and daughter had no expenses as they were staying at my wife's mother's so nothing to claim there too. Anything we get, such as ORC, will be at the discretion of AA or BA and a goodwill. Based on what goodwill we get shown we will decide whether to move to Star Alliance for our 3 return trips on this same itinerary per year currently flown on BA premium. There is always one problem at least.
