I haven't had such issues and have been able to book several multi-city trips in First.

Come to think of it, I have even booked open jaw trips, including segments on AC / UA, with the Swiss flights in First and the Air Canada / United in business. Never a problem.

On the other hand, I avoid calling them unless my life depends on it (and even then I'll think 17 times before).
