Airlines do use mystery shoppers. Although sometimes this has led to fraud, particular the case of one FT’er.

A mystery shopping company I work with occasionally still has an airline contract. Can’t self book anymore, have to request the job and then the mystery shopping company books the flight on your behalf.

IIRC, it’s a non paid job, with a 50% discount on the flight. So really targeting people that were going to fly anyway.
