I have never had a situation like that and I also haven't heard anyone speak about this issue until you brought it up. That seems really weird of them to ask people to close their shades just because someone might want to sleep. I hope I won't ever be asked to do that, because when I get the window seat, I definitely want to be able to see the view. And if some people feel like sleeping, that's what the blindfold sleeping masks are for.
