Don’t know how likely it is that many people would be in a position to make use of this tip but thought I’d post in case useful to someone in the future.
I took out an Amex platinum card last year because 1) it gave me 70,000 membership points (= avios) 2) the statement credits available exceeded the card fee and 3) the travel insurance and rental car excess insurance were useful at the time.
I wasn’t up for paying for another year at £575 so called to cancel. In an attempt to stop me cancelling they offered me 50,000 membership points (= avios).
Until October, when their T&Cs change, you can cancel any time and get a pro rata refund.
I will cancel because I want to get a BA Amex and save for a 241.
But 50,000 avios is a nice sweetner
