Well I'd start by checking the price of the item you want to buy in Europe then do the calculations as to which gives you the best savings.

But remember though that whilst you may be able to claim the vat back when leaving the EU when returning tothe UK given the transaction fees that are charged to process the refund it will likely be a lot less than the headline vat 'saving' you think you are making.
