To answer my own questions.
The pool area is very kid friendly. It has a great layout with three levels of pools, adult-only, kids pool, and larger general pool.
The surrounding area is safe, but there is a lot of construction going on across the street to re-develop the public beach area, so traffic tends to back up. There are better areas to walk, such as the running path on the harbor side of bocagrande, a couple of blocks away.
The beer and wine in the club lounge is complementary.

This is a great hotel, and will be even better in late 2024 when the renovations at the hotel are complete and the re-construction of the public beaches across the street have been finished.
