In fact, I just booked it for upcoming stays in October and November as the backup option while I hope that the (corporate) rate at my favorite Grand Hyatt Tokyo to come down to a more reasonable level, otherwise, I will rough it out at the HR Tokyo
Here are my corporate rates for the October and November bookings - so insane!
- October 2023: Hyatt Regency Tokyo at 20,500 JPY a night whereas Grand Hyatt Tokyo is at an absurd 119,850 JPY and Park Hyatt Tokyo at an insane 136,000 JPY!
- November 2023: Hyatt Regency Tokyo at 18,000 JPY a night whereas Grand Hyatt Tokyo is at a more reasonable 80,750 JPY (I may go for it) and Park Hyatt Tokyo at an even more expensive 139,600 JPY!
That's the prices at the Western hotel chains in Tokyo for you, and my other favorite hotel the MESM Autograph Collection is priced like the GH. If you want less expensive western chain hotels, go outside of Tokyo, such as Yokohama or Tokyo Bay where the 2 Hyatt there are quite reasonably priced! After Tokyo, my son is now in Toyama on the other side of Japan (where they have the best seafood) and he is in a very nice Doubletree at $75 a night!
When my brother-in-law and his wife told me that they could not justify staying at the GH Tokyo where we stayed, he booked one of those less expensive hotels which can easily be found on Expedia. While they said that the hotel was fine and had no problem with their stay at the Candeo Hotels Tokyo Roppongi (near the GH Tokyo), he commented to me that the rooms reminded him of those Tokyo "love hotels" that he saw on YouTube. I wasn't sure if he was kidding or not

Thanks for all the info! I see those prices and you gotta wonder: is GH really 4 to 5 times nicer than HR Tokyo? Because that is the price difference you are staring at. Holy moly.
We have a decent Bonvoy war chest as well and are actually doing two separate stints in Tokyo, for the initial visit to Tokyo we are doing AC Ginza which was a good points value. For the return to Tokyo is where I am looking at Hyatt Regency Tokyo. I am also considering Marriott Tokyo (which doesn't look all that great but I can do cash with points and not destroy our budget) and the MESM which you are saying is pretty sweet, however again that is going to end up being a lot of money out of pocket.
I am hesitant to pick some of those hotels you mentioned that are further outside the city center, but the pricing is appealing.
Anyways, I think I am going to go ahead and book the Hyatt Regency and be done with it. I have been checking the prices/points off and on for Hyatt and Bonvoy as if they are going to magically change in my favor and clearly that isn't happening anytime soon.
