We would only get a small snack followed by a hot breakfast an hour before landing. If they at least had the decency to tell us earlier then I would have at least been able to buy something for dinner to have on the plane but nope instead I spent most of the flight starving and when I asked if they had any food at all they could give me, they just told me 'no'. I wrote in a complaint a day or two after the flight and never got a response.

After that experience, even though I have VS Silver, I only fly with Delta on overnight flights and prefer them on day flights as I know I'll get two meals as with Virgin it's not guaranteed as I found out.
When was the trial?

Not sure it is the same thing that the OP asked. It wasn't a case that no meal was provided, they simply switched the full meal after take off, and the snack before arrival around. You still got two meals.

I can actually see some merit in that for such a late flight, I could eat in the lounge before boarding; and then get my head down straight away.

Having said that, I would also be annoyed if I hadn't been pre-warned. Probably not enough to switch carriers, but as always, YMMV.
