I think the caveat to this (at least in my experience) is that F bags are valet checked to pick up gate side on arrival. That said, I wouldn’t bank on this always happening and I try to be at the gate when boarding starts if I have a roller that has to go overhead.
I recently got the small spinner for 2-3 day trips and it fits under the F seats and in CR7 bins. Somewhat takes care of the bin (or gate check) issue and beats lugging a duffel or a small suit carrier when not needed.
