The flights you have to pay for are typically the garbage extremely priced and slow unreliable Gogo/Viasat service. It is also normally cheaper, sometimes significantly, to purchase a pass ahead of time instead of on the plane. I've seen t-con flights where they wanted $35+ just for that flight but it is $19 online for a day pass... which is still absurd but less.
I have never had a problem with ViaSat being slow and/or unreliable and have flown over 100 flights on aircraft thus equipped. But GoGo has frequently been slow/unreliable and is all that is currently available on most A221/A223, all A332/A333/A339 (except one), A359 (except one), B717, B739ER (ex-Batik/Lyon), B752 (D1 equipped only), all B763/B764, all CRJs, all E170/E175 frames.
