Perhaps I'm missing something here, but if an airline has space to send 100 units of aid to the disaster relief, why don't they just do it? If customers have only donated enough miles to cover 50 units, do the other 50 go to waste? It's all funny money isn't it, not like "donating" points/miles is providing cash to pay for the flight.
