As a start I usually use google flight explore option, just to have an idea of the prices in a certain country/area. Unfortunately so far I haven't seen any promising price for the days I need... but since it's still "early" I hope something will come up.
So, would I, for example, on a jaunt from, say LHR to SFO via JFK and LAX, look for trips out of JFK and LAX, returning to that place to continue the jaunt? Is that how it works?
