It is absolutely true on the E175. The next time you fly one of those, try counting how many rollerboards can actually fit in the overhead bins.
Add in crew luggage and first class passengers putting ALL their stuff overhead. There's been a few times I was in row 1, but last of first class to board, and my bag (not large at all) was back several rows. Once (oh the horror) in main cabin! And these were all on flights that required valet checking.
