Wow, I have to disagree here. You are paying them something...Points. I know when I stay on award stays @ Hilton or Marriott the 30K - 50K for a couple nights costs quite a bit of money to accumulate. I don't think that asking for a some type of points reimbursement is too much to ask. It's the "currency" that was used to "pay" for the room in the first place.
It's not like the hotel just invited them to stay free of charge and had these problems. They did pay for the room, just in a different form of currency. It's not too much to ask that a hotel have some type of backup / surge protection on vital systems. Not sure if the person is tipping the guy letting him in his room all the time but I certainly wouldn't do so.
