One last suggestion would be to be sure to check out the bus schedules. I find I am usually a) able to get a seat and b) likely to get where I am going as quickly as on the tube. Plus the ride itself can be a sightseeing adventure for the kids.
Great point. There's so much to see from the bus as this will be kids first time to the UK. My wife on the other hand will require some convincing and occasionally mix in some Ubers.

Thanks all for the advice on the Piccadilly line. It's only 2.10 GBP offpeak per person on our day of arrival. Fast and cheap!
