Yeah, unlikely I'd call support for this.
Something was up, since all VPNs I tried had similar/same issues: connect & disconnect.
It stabilized now again, and works as suspected, so could have been a plethora of things.
Of course, rebooting seems to be the universal first rule of tech support, but the A people also provide more constructive advice. I don't feel guilty about bothering them over even minor nuisances because support is part of the service we're paying for. I did have a connection issue with Santa Clara on my phone (stealth mode) this evening on a restaurant's WiFi network. I just switched to Portland (previous tip), which I gather is more stable and has lighter loads, and all was good.
