eventually my friend (Gold) got op up to Y+. First we thought it is commercial gesture since Y+ was pretty and Y not completely full a few minutes before boarding when seat map was checked but Y turns out to be full.

Edit: some Y seats are reported to be empty, including his original in Y so who knows. Upgrade was magical beep, nothing before in the app.
could be a malfunctioning Y seat or perhaps a weight and balance thing if J is empty. But I also experienced once on a short haul flight that I got opupped but my original Y seat remained empty.

AF/KL algorithms go in mysterious ways 😁
