You may be right. I was thinking about a quick hop from Melbs to Sydney a few weeks ago with the weird 'front and back to the middle' loading. I climbed up the steps through the aft door and I don't recall her checking when I boarded. I agree though - I feel odd boarding in the U.S. and not asked to show my boarding pass.
