How long do you plan to be a USA resident? It will take a full calendar year to get status.

Generally it is best to have status on the carrier you are using. AC status on UA flights will not give you E+ access (or the unlikely upgrade) nor elite phone line access or elite award booking. It will give you bag allowance, boarding priority and lounge access.
