I recently rented a Polestar 2 for 26 days from London Heathrow.
The car:
2023 Long-range Single motor 78kw/h/170kw
Polestar 2 Pilot pack- Pilot Assist
- Adaptive cruise control
- Blind spot monitoring
- Cross traffic alert and rear collision warning
- All-around parking sensors (called Park Assist)
- Pixel LED cornering headlights with LED fog lights
- And a 360° camera with bird’s eye view
Both charging cables, a Type 2 with a UK 3-pin plug able to charge at 10A max at 240v single phase, from a standard 13A power outlet common in UK homes.
The other cable was a CCS2 rated at 32A/480V
Charging:
I was staying in the general Oxford area and found public charging stations easily. 7-22kw/h chargers were common, faster 50-150kw/h were scarce. Prices ranged from free to 0.55gbp up to and including 22kw/h chargers. 50kw/h chargers were 0.55 to 0.65GBP and anything above 50kw/h was generally 0.79GBP.
I did however find some free chargers and also some rapid chargers (50kw/h) at slow charger rates (0.49GBP). I used a combination of Zapmap, PodPoint, Shell Recharge, BP Pulse, and Ionity apps.
Efficiency:
Ranged from a short trip of 31kw/100miles to a best of 23kw/100miles over a 75-mile round trip. My average was in the 24-26kw/100miles. I mostly ran the car with at least one passenger, I often had 2 passengers. Mostly trips were between 5-10 miles one way.
Hertz:
Pick-up was, well less than great. I am PC which translates to Gold in the UK. I had to enter the office and take a number. They were not busy, they just did not have enough staff. Even though I had pre-booked and paid, I was not able to just walk to my car, get in and drive. I arrived 15mins prior to my pick-up time, I waited for 25mins until my number got called. I was seen and allocated a car in 10mins. I was given no instruction, and no mention of the return charge level. Just given the keys and bay number and sent on my way.
Drop-off was slightly better, although we felt rushed to get the car unpacked, 3 of us with a total of 5 suitcases. Transportation to the terminal was prompt and we were helped with our luggage in both directions.
Overall it was a positive experience, no real issues with charging, range, or the car itself. In short, I'd do it again.
Running cost: Gas/Petrol in our area was on average 1.45GBP per litre. Using 25kw/100miles and a charging cost of 0.50/kw/h
We would need to better 50mpg in a gas car to make it cheaper.
If we go to the extreme and use 30kw/100miles and 0.75GBP per kw/h that number drops to 30mpg as our break-even point.
I did not expect to save money on running costs, I wanted to experience a fully electric car. The rental cost was cheaper than an equivalent gas car. I paid $38/day for a 26-day rental.
