On a multi city you can't chose the fare level. When booking a straight return you can choose the fare level which has 3 options with the middle being economy semi flex but even that has the same seat selection again. So no way to get a suitable fare level for the better seats on the outbound flight unless presumably choosing the full economy fare which costs more than business.
Without doing some dummy bookings, it's hard to say if the fare class actually changes or not. I'm not 100% sure with JL, but some airlines with multiple tiers like that still book into the same booking code for mileage earning on other programs, just have different ticket restrictions, allowances, and home-airline mileage earning.

That may very well lower your fare class as well to one that doesn't have seat selection, or very few options.
