Upgrading from Prem (A) to Delta One - interesting situation with partners DL/ VA
Will do my best to keep this concise.
Bought an Award Ticket for Main DTW-AMS through Virgin Atlantic (no availability for Upper Class). Flight is DL metal and marketed on DL website as well, but it was a far better value on VA (for 2 people 60k vs 600k+).
Logged into DL account shortly after and was offered option to upgrade with DL points to "Premium Select" (A). Easy decision given the value so pulled the trigger. My thinking was that the reissued fare would be owned by Delta at that point. However it seems I'm in limbo now.
Apparently the seats are NOT eligible for comp upgrade Delta One and I CANT pay for it either. After several calls to Delta with different agents, the resulting conversations have been confusion across the board and general consensus I "should not have been able to buy the upgrade" and I "can't buy the upgrade to DL One with points or miles." One rep did go so far as giving the price and attempting to proceed and process my card but was unable in the end. On the other end with VA, they still don't have any inventory so it's a non-starter.
To wrap this up - our flight leaves at 10PM EST today. There are still 10+ open Delta One seats but blocked out for selection on the seat map. Given that I've had no luck with phone reps, what do you think the next best option is at the airport? Sky Priority check in, Sky Lounge, Gate Agent? For whatever it's worth I am a Plat and booked the initial upgrade with Reserve card- not sure that's worth much these days.
Or should I just be thankful for what I've got and move on? It's my husband's first time to Europe so trying to do the best I can for the trip.
Thanks!
