That depends a lot on how the operator has implemented SMS message transfer. I have this using Google Fi, but the original standard for SMS exchange has no such provision, these are carried through specific access points that are only reachable through the cellular connection (though I guess that spec may have evolved since moving to LTE and 5G).

But it is definitely worth trying.
