I had a look on expert flyer also and it shows the forward economy cabin pretty much wide open (I can't select any of that section), rear cabin matches what I can select (except exit row which I can't) and most of those seats are taken. Went with the best of the worst and chose a middle section aisle seat - at least if nothing better comes up I'm not stuck in a middle seat.
Indeed for JAL international flights, there is the disclaimer on the booking website that "booking classes O, Q, and N have limited seat selections". I suppose that makes sense why you cannot pick better seats on the MEL - NRT section.
Unless you have oneworld status, I suppose you will have to wait until closer to check-in time if any window seats remain open in the forward cabin section (I doubt it
