Several of the BA metal JFK-LHR flights show Biz award availability, so interesting idea. However, doesn't one of the legs have to be on AA metal according to AA's rules for SWU use on BA?
I plan to purchase a PE ticket on the JFK-LHR anyway, so if doing it all on BA would work that would be great since the upgrade would be to Biz.

That is the way it works using SWUs on AA metal flights so I would assume the same would apply on BA metal flights. That is, apply your SWU to the BA segment before it expires, then upgrade the AA segment using the same SWU whenever C space opens.
That is my assumption as well. However, I haven't found anything on FT confirming that it would work. I've also found many posts about AA's agents not fully understanding the rules, so I'm skeptical...
