Terrible experience at the DEN far left Clear/TSA checkpoint last weekend.
Did my usual routine (apple watch stays on, no belt, 2 metal amex cards in wallet), Iphone/laptop in bag obviously. Metal detector single beeps (selection for electronics screening).
In contrast to every other airport I've been selected for "random" electronics screening the agent demanded that I tell him where my items were so that he could dig them out of my bag. Usually I just toss my phone in my backpack and sometimes it ends up deep in there slipping past other things, and my laptop compartment is also used to store documents, and any flat art etc that we are bringing back. I prefer to the get the electronics out myself 1.) for cleanliness and not having someone else dig in my bag and 2.) to prevent other things from falling out when when taking them out. Agent was incredibly rude about the whole thing, basically suggesting that I was being unreasonable and stupid for requesting to take things out myself, despite the fact that I've been selected at many other airports and always been allowed to present them with the electronics they mean to wipe test.
I did bring up the agents incredibly rude attitude and the discrepancy with the supervisor at the central desk, and she said that was TSA procedure and that all other airports should not let me get my own electronics out because its in the process of an "inspection".
I totally get this logic if there is a suspicious item identified on the Xray and they want to make sure they are correctly identifying it, but for a "random' wipe test on electronics, this seems ridiculous.
