You can try using the RJ site or I've had a lot of success lately using UL which will let me pick seats when other airlines fail (although the seat map doesn't work properly so you'll need to pair it with something like Expert Flyer)
The RJ/UL wheeze, and indeed the MH wheeze for problems with other OneWorld reservations can be misleading. It's a comforting process, clicking on your desired seat, but the selection may not stick. I have no idea why not.
