Just a note that this is a bit less seamless for child shinkansen ticket. My kid was 3.5. As he doesn't need to pay for normal trains I didn't get a child IC card for him, but I did buy a shinkansen ticket on Smart-EX (for extra seat), linked it to a digital (non-child) suica, but we couldn't get past the shinkansen gates this way.
