I use Telegram - I installed it specifically to use on United, since I don't normally have any messaging app. It works well, even over the ocean.

I often do a transatlantic roundtrip (ex-Europe to West coast) and buy the monthly global sub to use for the entire trip, as I find it better value. Each individual transatlantic leg usually prices to 35+ for me, and then I can get access on any onward domestic connections. I have rarely had issues with it being completely unavailable for the flights. It works fine for what I need to do.
