Got Hit With the "Smart" Fuel Guage Scam

I had a one-way MCO-MLB rental over the weekend. Fuel gauge indicated full. Nothing on the rental agreement about fuel status at pick-up. On the way to drop off in MLB, stopped at a WaWa that is 2.5 miles from MLB. Filled it up until the pump shut-off and stopped there. That should indicate full, as it is a safety hazard to continue pumping.

Dropped car and got an email for the return. I didn't look at the email until I was inside security. When I checked, it showed a refueling charge for a half of a gallon of gas, as it was showing leaving with 14.1g and ending with 13.6g. The charge was $2.80 including tax.

Yes, I went back out to the counter and had it removed---more on principal than anything else. The supervisor reversed the charge and gave me an additional $10 credit. She said that the guages lag behind in the reporting of the fuel. That is not right, because if that was the case, it would have reported the 1/4 of a tank that I had before the fill-up.

Anyhow, I am satisfied with the outcome, but I am not sure what else that I could have done to prevent this. I used maybe a tenth of a gallon of gas from the station to the return. For reference, the vehicle was a CadillacXT4. Rant over.
