To the OP: upgrading an economy miles ticket is not a good way to get into the J cabin. You're basically last in line to get the chance to upgrade, and if you were to upgrade if there even was availability, you'll have ended up paying more, in total, than most other ways of travelling in J.
I used miles to upgrade a reward ticket (on board) CTG-AMS - we flew BOG-CTG-AMS - and could not upgrade BOG-CTG-AMS as there was no availability on the BOG-CTG leg. So we asked the purser in CTG about the upgrade option and it was offered for 65.000 miles per seat.

Upgrading in advance does not work with miles - other than cancelling the reward ticket and rebook in business class. However with these last minute upgrades miles are accepted to upgrade even a reward ticket (at least aboard)
