Be flexible (including not starting out from your home airport and leaving open jaw as an option) and say yes to all carriers. I don't think I have ever paid more than $2K TATL from the east coast.

The other strategy is stretch out the return flight back to the US for later and piece it together with a ex-Europe itinerary.
