Agree. Seems like this is exactly the case use for buying a refundable ticket, though the timing of the decision go / no-go is probably tighter than most.
Doing this once in the circumstances you describe should not be an issue.

Kacee 's note about making sure to cancel before T-30 will make it even cleaner.
