Not guaranteed - aircraft swap or diligent agent can get them booted (worse case possibility) to middle seats in back. Plus, buying tickets you don't intend to use is against CoC. Without 1K on record, they won't get free bags, either.
It would be nice if UA would do frequent record checks automatically to sweep such passengers out of their seats (to random middle seats in back) to free up more seat selections for those who actually deserve them.
