I don't know the rules for this, but I think that it is reasonable that they have a standard compensation and are not expected to compensate for special circumstances like buying clothes for a wedding. If they first open the door for compensating for special circumstances then it's hard to draw a line where their liability ends. Anyone who travels knows that bags can be delayed and should take precautions for special circumstances, such as taking needed clothes and medicines in a carry on.
