For general safety concerns in Santiago, I'd make sure not to go South/West of Santiago Centro, be careful at night around Santiago Centro and Bellavista, and take a car between neighborhoods at night. Also, be aware of rogue taxis in Bellavista at night, who will make up some BS fixed rate, or "forget" to set the meter. Once they know that you know where you are going and what the general fare should be, they'll back off their nonsense, afraid that you're going to let the Carabineros know (including telling me that I don't owe anything for the ride). Better to take an app ride at night. Also, be aware of the surroundings of Plaza Italia/Baquedano/Dignidad in the event of a protest that you may not have expected - which is reason enough not to stay at what was the Crowne Plaza (now I believe an unbranded Marriott property) due to access concerns, even though it is much closer to my friends' places.
Thanks so much. Yeah I ended up with the Four Points, as the staff there have always been accommodating. I appreciate the additional tips as well. This is my first time going in winter, and I figured by the time it gets dark I would use Uber. Last time I went was in 2019, just before the protests began.
Now to make sure I get my SIM card the moment I arrive. I saw in other forums that it would be quicker to get one inside a supermarket then just recharge. I used to run into the Entel store at Costanera Center to get one but I guess this would be easier. Oh, and remember to make sure the immigration officer gives me the PDI receipt this time (honestly I am quite sure she did it on purpose last time around).
Thanks again!
