Even if they wanted to they couldn't given the status of the US-China air bilateral. At any rate, range is not so much of an issue. EWR-ANC-NRT-PVG is 7922 miles, and the range of the 787-9 is ~8700 miles. Of course, EWR-HKG avoiding Russian airspace is not likely to be feasible but PVG/PEK would be fine.
