Thanks- I didn’t know that is an option when the cancellation is so far out ? The BA return flight in Y was circa £275pp the replacement flight with EZY was £200pp one way. BA cancelled a lunchtime flight and the replacement was around 2100 if that makes a difference.

The only EU/UK261 right that is conditional based on the length of notice given is the right to compensation. The rights to care (refreshments, accommodation etc.) and to re-routing apply regardless of the length of notice given.
It's more difficult recovering the cost of a flight on an alternative airline if a same-day replacement has been offered, due to the (IMO too airline-friendly) CAA guidance that BA likes to tout.
It may be that this is a case that has to go to CEDR.
