The sector of your hotel is one of the safer areas of Santiago at the moment. The Costanera Center probably would have been even safer. Crime against tourists for the most part usually is non-violent (but can be violent) and focussed on pickpocketing, snatch/grab and run (watch for motorcycles, cars with a group that stop and get out to rob as well as the usual street thieves on foot). The recent year crime stats are shocking as the violent crime rate is indeed significantly up along with the Caribbean-style/influence modus operandi details of the crimes. Public perception on the threat of crime is also now rated as one of the highest in the hemisphere so you will probably have Chileans commenting on it and advising the foreigner.
Got it - I appreciate that context. With the AC I didn't like where the entrance is on the side of Costanera Center, that was what gave me pause.
