Secondary security screens on international flights bound for the US are not unique to MNL. I believe it’s a DHS requirement. I certainly remember post-9/11 at MEL and SYD, there was always a secondary security search at the gate with barriers in place. AKL still puts temporary barriers and has extra security around the US bound gates. A lot of it may be theatrical, but not unique to the Philippines.
