I do agree it's not the end of the world but it's still a matter of perspective. For example, I'm flying LHR - NCL next month on the BA1338 which is scheduled for a 2050 departure from LHR and a 2200 arrival into NCL. If we're 10 - 20 minutes late it's not really a big deal. I just get a slightly later Metro from the Airport. If it's an hour late then it's really touch and go whether I make the last Metro at 2309 as I then have only 9 minutes from plane to train including buying a ticket etc. If it's more than an hour late then it's a taxi from the airport instead. Now one could argue that getting a taxi is maybe less of an inconvenience as it's probably quicker door to door than taking the Metro and then walking from my station to my parents' home. However, it's significantly more expensive. You also need to be mindful that the delay is not just inconveniencing me but also my folks who have to stay up later to see their son when he arrives etc.
And to add to this bit - the taxi fare goes up to the late-night rate (approx 10% extra?) as well!
