How literal do we want to be about stock phrases?

"Drive carefully." Are you implying that I don't normally do that?
"Goodnight." Are you worried that I'm in danger of being attacked by werewolves or something?
"Get well soon. " That's not entirely within my control, so don't order me about.

​​​​​​A normal Italian way to wish somebody good luck on an exam is "In bocca al lupo" (In the wolf's mouth), to which the reply is "Crepi il lupo" or simply "Crepi" (The wolf will die; or may the wolf die). Do wolves really roam in Italian examination halls?
