HI San Francisco - Golden Gateway (Master Thread)

Really surprised no one has started a thread for this hotel. I had a two night weekday stay for medical treatment nearby and it was way, way better than I expected.

From the outside, the property doesn't look like much, and it's in a weird location. Mostly residential area, kind of close to the Civic Center area but up a hill. Not a great location for much, really.

However, Polk Street dining/shopping is right behind the hotel and the beginning of the California Street cable car is right there. The hotel was busy when I stayed and it seemed to be roughly 80% happy European tourists. Many of them were using the cable car to get downtown! As a resident, I don't really think of the cable car as a real transportation method but there was almost no wait and the cars go almost all the way to the Embarcadero and drop off a block away from the Ferry Building. So if you're not going to stay right in the financial district this could really be a good compromise.

The hotel restaurant (ROH) is open again for breakfast and dinner. It looked like the breakfast was ordered from the counter and the dinner might have been full service. Breakfast was very busy when I was there. Seemed like a lot of folks were getting simple continental pastry options and coffee from the counter on their way out for a day of tourism. Note that there is also a Starbucks right next door in the bank lobby.

Fitness room and (outdoor) pool on the 6th floor. There's a seating area around the pool and then a second seating area outdoors away from the pool. Typical cold summer day in SF but I lounged outdoors for a while and it was peaceful enough.

As a Platinum, I was offered a two category upgrade to a corner room on a high floor without asking. The panoramic view was breathtaking! Because of the angle, I couldn't see any of the bridges, but the view was north and east, from Fort Mason, to Alcatraz, to Coit Tower, to the Transamerica Building, to the downtown towers, all the way down to the Port of SF. This must be one of the best options for a view of the city.

Room was clean and only showing very minor wear. Had both an iron and a steamer, plus a refrigerator but no microwave. Double paned windows so no road noise and only a little noise from other rooms, except for when my neighbor was standing right next to the connecting door. Unfortunately, the room was very stuffy when the air conditioning was not running. There are no vents in the room at all, except for a useless vent in the bathroom that had no air flow, so no way to get fresh air into the room. Aside from that, I slept very well.

Not a great place to have a car. Only obvious parking option was $40/night in the hotel garage, since there don't seem to be any real 24-hour garages anywhere in the neighborhood.

Overall, it was a great stay. Not fancy but definitely delivered well. If I need to be back in the neighborhood again, I would gladly stay there again. For tourists, depending on what you want to do, this might be a good lower-cost option, if you don't mind the need to be creative with transportation.

(Note for ElevatorEnthusiast : There are 6 elevators, with 1 reserved for employee use. When I was there, 2 elevators were always broken. Didn't seem like the same ones all the time either... and yet there wasn't much of a delay ever. Fast elevators.)

EDIT: There's been a lot of talk about safety in SF lately. Every time I was in the lobby, there was an inconspicuous security guard keeping watch, and the elevators only allowed you on your own specific floor. The surrounding neighborhood was in ok condition. Some homeless folks but mostly kept to themselves. Seemed pretty average for SF.
