Moot point now but for anyone else looking:
  • Massachusetts has no deposit or monthly/one time fees on their EZPass
  • NY (except for Port Authority issued tags starting with 005) also has no deposits/fees. This is useful because NY charges more for out of state tags (especially at the MTA/Hudson River crossings), but you can pick one up at rest stops/AAA/DMV/etc.
  • Illinois has a refundable $10 deposit but no fees.
Throw one of those on the windshield with a cheap amazon holder when you rent and voila
